Data Tables and Charts — SAT Math Explained
Visual and tabular representations of data designed to organize, display, and communicate quantitative information clearly. Includes frequency tables, bar charts, histograms, pie charts, and more.
The Core Idea
Tables and charts make patterns in data visible at a glance. Reading them accurately is a critical skill — it requires understanding what each axis, bar, slice, or cell represents.
Types Of Displays
Shows how many times each value or category occurs
Compares quantities across discrete categories
Shows distribution of continuous data grouped into intervals
Shows parts of a whole as proportional slices (useful when parts sum to 100%)
Shows change over time — connects data points with lines
Shows individual data points on a number line — good for small data sets
Shows five-number summary: min, Q1, median, Q3, max
Reading Tables
Identify what each row and column represents
Note the units in column headers
Look for totals or subtotals and verify they make sense
Use the table to calculate rates, percents, or comparisons as needed
Reading Graphs
Read axis labels and units carefully
Note the scale increments — they may not be 1
Identify trends (increasing, decreasing, constant)
Compare bars or lines for relative values
Common Errors to Avoid
Misreading the scale (assuming each grid line = 1 when it might = 10 or 100)
Confusing bar height with the value of a specific data point
Not noting that pie chart percentages must sum to 100%
