SAT General Study Tips & Strategies for Every Student
These general SAT study strategies apply to every student, regardless of your starting score or target. Mastering these fundamentals is the single most impactful thing you can do before diving into content review. Top scorers consistently cite these habits as the foundation of their improvement.
Must-Know Strategies
Start hereProcess of Elimination is Your #1 Weapon
Must KnowThere is ONE correct answer and THREE definitively wrong ones. Train yourself to find reasons to eliminate wrong answers rather than reasons why something could be right. Being elimination-focused is especially powerful in Reading & Writing.
On every practice question, write down WHY each wrong answer is wrong before checking the key.

Analyze Every Mistake with a 4-Category System
Must KnowMistakes fall into 4 types: (1) Content weakness — you didn't know the concept. (2) Time pressure — you ran out of time. (3) Question comprehension — you misread what was being asked. (4) Careless error — silly mistake despite knowing the content. Each type has a completely different fix.
After every practice test, label every wrong answer with one of these 4 codes. Look for patterns over time.

Never Skip Test Review — It's Where Growth Happens
Must KnowTaking practice tests without reviewing them is a waste of time. Spend at LEAST as long reviewing a test as you spent taking it. For every wrong answer: understand why you were wrong, look up the concept, and re-solve the problem from scratch without looking at the answer.
Block review time in your calendar before you even schedule the practice test. One test + thorough review per week is ideal.

High-Impact Strategies
Download Bluebook and Practice Inside It
High ImpactThe real SAT is taken in the Bluebook app. Practice in it so the interface is familiar on test day. Learn: how to mark answers, navigate modules, use the strikethrough tool, hide/show the timer, and use the Mark for Review flag.
Download Bluebook from bluebook.app.collegeboard.org. Take at least 1 full practice test in the app before your real test.
Use Only Official College Board Practice Tests
High ImpactCollege Board provides 7 free adaptive digital SAT practice tests inside Bluebook. These are the gold standard — they're made by the same people who write the real test. Third-party tests vary wildly in accuracy. Don't burn official tests early; save them to simulate real test conditions.
Space official tests throughout your prep. Take one early to diagnose weaknesses, then one or two per month. Save 2 for the final weeks.
Build Mental Stamina with Full-Length Timed Tests
High ImpactThe SAT is ~2.5 hours of focused cognitive work. If you only practice individual questions or short sets, you'll hit a wall of fatigue on the real test. Simulate the full experience: no phone on breaks, same start time as your real test date.
Do at least 3 full-length timed practice tests before test day. Do NOT use your phone during breaks — it disrupts cognitive recovery.
Take the Day Before the Test Off
High ImpactDo NOT do heavy studying the day before the SAT. Your brain needs to consolidate what it's learned. Light review of key formulas/grammar rules is fine, but avoid full practice tests or cramming. If you've been grinding hard, take 2 days off.
Schedule a light review session (30 min max) the night before: key formulas, grammar rules, and a visualization of your test-day routine.
Use Khan Academy for Targeted Skill Practice
High ImpactKhan Academy's official SAT prep is free and built in collaboration with College Board. It's especially useful for drilling specific skill gaps after you've identified them from practice tests. Many of the questions overlap with official materials.
After each practice test, identify your 3 weakest skill areas and complete all Khan Academy exercises for those specific topics.
Additional Strategies
Watch Score Prediction Videos the Week Before
UsefulIn the days before the SAT, watching prediction videos from high scorers and tutors can help you anticipate the types of questions most likely to appear. Verified high scorers report this strategy saving them 20–40+ points.
Search YouTube for 'Digital SAT [month/year] prediction' in the week before your test date.
Track Your Score Trajectory — Don't Just Take Tests
UsefulCreate a simple spreadsheet tracking your score on each practice test, broken down by section and skill area. Progress isn't always linear — a dip before a spike is normal. What matters is the trend over 4–8 weeks.
After each practice test, log: date, total score, RW score, Math score, and top 3 error types. Review trends monthly.
