The short answer

Command of Evidence questions ask which information most directly supports or weakens a specific claim. Translate the claim into required evidence, inspect only the relevant text or graph variables, and compare choices by direction, scope, and strength. The best answer must be both true and useful for the exact claim—not merely related to the topic.

Turn the claim into an evidence target

Underline the claim’s subject, direction, and boundary. A claim that a treatment improves growth in low light requires a comparison involving treatment, growth, and low-light conditions. Evidence about bright light may be true but outside scope. Evidence that plants grew after treatment without a control group may not show improvement. Rewrite the target as a sentence beginning ‘I need evidence that…’ before evaluating choices.

Notice strength words. ‘Can,’ ‘often,’ and ‘always’ demand different evidence. A single counterexample can weaken an absolute claim but may not weaken a cautious claim about typical behavior. Likewise, one supporting example rarely proves a universal conclusion. Match the choice’s evidentiary force to the wording you were given.

  • Direction: increase, decrease, similarity, difference, or association?
  • Conditions: where, when, or for whom must it hold?
  • Comparison: relative to which baseline or alternative?
  • Strength: possible, likely, typical, or universal?

Choose textual evidence by function

Read the claim before the quotations. Predict the kind of finding, observation, or statement that would help. Then paraphrase each choice instead of reacting to repeated keywords. A quotation can mention the same person, object, or study while doing nothing for the logical relationship. Direct support often restates the claim in more concrete terms or supplies the missing comparison.

For weakening questions, identify an assumption. If a claim treats two groups as comparable, evidence of a major baseline difference weakens the inference. If a claim attributes change to one cause, a credible alternative cause matters. The correct choice need not prove the claim false; it must make the reasoning less secure more directly than the alternatives.

Read graphs and tables in a fixed order

Start with the title, axes or headers, units, groups, and legend. Then translate the claim into the exact comparison needed. Only after that should you read values. This order prevents selecting a dramatic number from the wrong series or year. Estimate when answer choices describe broad patterns; calculate only when the distinction depends on a precise difference, rate, or percentage.

Separate counts from rates and absolute change from percent change. An increase from 10 to 20 is ten units and 100 percent; an increase from 100 to 120 is twenty units but 20 percent. A group with the highest count may not have the highest rate if group sizes differ. Always attach a unit and group name to a number before using it as evidence.

Recognize evidence distractors

A true-but-irrelevant choice is the central trap. It may quote the passage accurately or report a graph value correctly, yet fail to support the specified claim. Another trap reverses comparison order, such as saying Group A exceeds Group B when the graph shows the opposite. Extreme wording can turn modest evidence into an unsupported universal conclusion.

Beware of half-matches. A choice may use the correct variable but wrong condition, or correct group but wrong time. Build a small checklist from the claim and require every box. When two choices survive, prefer the one requiring fewer assumptions and addressing more of the claim directly.

Review evidence errors as logic errors

For every miss, write the claim target and what your choice actually established. The gap is the lesson. If you selected a related detail, practice stating the necessary relationship. If you reversed data, slow down while naming groups and units. If you overclaimed, mark strength words in both claim and choice. This is more useful than rereading the explanation and deciding the correct answer ‘makes sense.’

Create original micro-claims from everyday data. Compare commute times, library visits, plant growth, or survey proportions. Write one supporting statement, one weakening statement, and two related but irrelevant statements. Authoring distractors teaches the boundaries that test questions exploit without copying any protected material.
